Pioneering hay contractor reaps rewards with Massey Ferguson’s Hesston Heritage

Brothers Harry & Peter Taylor understand the value and importance of quality machinery. Having started their contracting business, West Wimmera Baling, just before the drought in 1980, the Taylors needed the best and most reliable balers available at the time. This was the start of a long history with Hesston built square balers.

Starting with four Large Square 4800 Series balers the Taylors now run six Massey Ferguson 2100 Series 4x3 balers. Based out of Nhill in Victoria, the operation keeps the brothers busy, employing five drivers that service the Hopeton, Nhill and Beaufort regions. The Taylors also employ four truck drivers for their year round carting business.

Harry and Peter established West Wimmera Baling due to the demand for square bales to suit freight and export logistics. They were one of the very first owners of the Hesston built balers in Australia. The large square balers allowed larger and denser bales to be produced, meaning more bales loaded onto trucks with more weight, reducing transport costs.

Today, West Wimmera Baling averages 45,000 bales a season, which translates to 500 bales a day, so the Taylors require reliable machinery to minimise downtime and be ready to go when conditions permit. That’s why the Taylors continue with the Hesston heritage found in today’s Massey Ferguson balers. Applying the same basic principles of simple build and high capacity for 30 years, Massey Ferguson’s large square balers are the most reliable balers on the market according to Harry Taylor.

Although Harry believes that the simplicity of the Massey balers is key to their success, he also agrees that his new MF2100 Series balers, purchased from Irwin Motors in Horsham, have definite new advantages.

“The new balers have been strengthened and the capacity has increased by more than 40% over previous models. Features like auto-lube, and the packer crank and auto density control, which gives us superior bale density, makes these balers stand out amongst the rest,” said Harry.

Auto-lube has also really helped the Taylors with their already heavy demands on time, as explained by Harry. “Auto-lube has really reduced our maintenance time, it only takes half an hour a day for quick grease, blow down and check over of the baler.”

Harry lives by the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” so its no surprise to anyone that he plans to continue building on his already long relationship with Massey Ferguson balers.

“If they keep building their balers with a simple concept and high capacity, which keeps those bricks dropping out the back, then I’m happy.”
